Boilerplate
SafePhrase is a free iPhone app that protects families from AI voice-clone scams. Each family shares a secret three-word phrase that automatically changes every minute, computed privately on each person's own phone and never sent to any server. When a call sounds exactly like someone you love and asks for money, you simply ask for the phrase. If they can't say it, it isn't them. Built by independent UK developer Luke Green, SafePhrase turns the safe-word advice now given by banks and police into something that works under pressure: nothing to remember, useless to an eavesdropper, and always one glance away. Verifying a caller takes five seconds. Families call it "SafePhrasing" someone, and being asked is a trust signal, not an accusation: if you're in the circle, you're one of the people being protected.
Story angles
- The scam wave: voice cloning has made "trust the voice" obsolete, and the safe-phrase advice from banks needs a practical tool.
- The human angle: the founder's own mother was scammed by an impersonation call, and he built the app in response. Read the full story.
- The privacy angle: an anti-scam tool with a zero-knowledge design; the secret never touches a server, so there is nothing to breach.
- The how-to: what a safe phrase is, why a static word fails, and how to set one up properly for a family.
Key facts
| What it is | A free iPhone app that gives families a shared secret phrase, changing every minute, so they always know a caller is really who they say they are and a scammer is stopped in their tracks. |
|---|---|
| The problem | AI can clone a familiar voice from seconds of audio. "Mum, it’s me, I’m in trouble" scams now defeat caller ID and voice recognition. |
| How it works | A family "circle" shares a secret. Each phone independently computes the same three-word phrase every 60 seconds. On a suspicious call, you ask for the phrase. |
| Why it’s different | Banks and police advise agreeing a safe word. SafePhrase makes that advice work in practice: nothing to remember, useless if overheard, automatic across the family. |
| Privacy | Zero-knowledge by design. The phrase is computed on each device and never sent to or stored on any server. It works offline. |
| Price | Free for a family circle with unlimited members. Optional paid tiers add the Apple Watch app and extra circles. |
| Platform | iPhone, with an Apple Watch app and home/lock screen widgets. Available in the UK and US. |
