Troubleshooting
Our phrases don’t match
Two honest phones showing different words almost always means one of two things:
- A clock is wrong. The words are derived from the time, so a drifted clock derives different words. SafePhrase hides the phrase and warns you when it detects this. Fix: Settings, General, Date & Time, Set Automatically.
- One phone missed a key rotation. If your circle’s security key was rotated while a phone was frozen or offline for a long while, that phone’s key is out of date. Both sides get told: the member sees “your key is out of date”, and the admin sees a prompt to send a fresh invite. Accepting the fresh invite resyncs in one tap and keeps your verification level.
If a phrase mismatch happens during a real call and you don’t know why, treat it as a failed check first and debug later. Hang up and call the person back on a number you already have.
I’m not getting notifications
Check iPhone Settings, Notifications, SafePhrase, and make sure notifications and Badges are allowed. SafePhrase is deliberately quiet: one notification per event, and the red badge only ever counts things waiting on you, so if the badge is empty there is genuinely nothing to do.
New phone, or reinstalled the app
Circle keys live in your phone’s secure hardware, not on our servers, so they don’t follow your Apple account to a new device. Sign in as usual, then ask an admin of each of your circles to send you a fresh invite; tapping it re-links your new phone. Your plan comes back with Restore purchases.
An invite link doesn’t work
Invites are single use and expire. If a link says it’s invalid, ask for a new one; it takes the sender seconds. If you’re being urged to hurry by whoever “sent” it, that urgency is itself a red flag: call them on a number you already have.
